“Hey Love” by Dustin Hunt // Summer 2019

1119 North Washington Avenue // Lansing, Michigan

Approximately 60’ W X 20’ H // latex and spray paint

Muralmatics founder Dustin Hunt was a featured artist in Below the Stacks Mural Festival and wanted to create a piece to commemorate Stevie Wonder’s time in Lansing. For inspiration, Dustin flipped through Songs in the Key of Life’s lyric book with liner notes and found a note that read, “Thank you Michigan School For The Blind and all of its previous, current and future staff.” With this in mind, Dustin decided to focus on young Stevie Wonder (originally known as “Little Stevie”) who was recording and performing studio albums and chart-topping hits as a middle and high school student at Michigan’s only school for the blind, in Lansing. One of those hits was “Hey Love”. To emphasize the impact Stevie has had on music, Dustin referred to one of hip-hops most formidable groups, De La Soul, who sampled “Hey Love” decades after it’s release. Do you know what song De La Soul created using “Hey Love”?

This project was made possible through support and partnership with All of the Above Hip Hop Academy, Arts Council of Greater Lansing, Community Foundation and several other organizations.
